The road from Marrakech
Allow roughly 2.5–3 hours each way in normal conditions. A day trip is therefore a full day, but the road burden is lower than southern Atlas crossings and the arrival gives an immediate change of climate and atmosphere.

What the beach is actually like
Essaouira’s main beach is broad and open, and the Atlantic wind is part of the destination. It is better understood as a coastal landscape for walking, views and water sports than as a guaranteed calm-water resort beach.
Conditions vary by season and day. If swimming or surfing is a priority, check local conditions rather than assuming every afternoon is the same.

Who should stay overnight?
Stay if you dislike fixed departure times, want evening atmosphere, or know that coast and food are major interests. A day trip is enough if Essaouira is one contrast within a Marrakech-based stay.
