Carpets: start with use, size and technique
Before looking at dozens of carpets, know where it will go, approximate dimensions and whether you prefer pile, flatweave or another texture. That makes comparison possible.
Ask where the piece was woven and what materials were used. A useful seller should be able to discuss the object itself, not only repeat a generic tribal story.
Leather: inspect the construction
Leather quality varies. Check stitching, lining, hardware and finishing rather than choosing only by smell or color. If a bag needs to survive years of travel, construction matters more than the drama of the shop presentation.
Spices and apothecary products
Buy culinary spices because you know how you will use them. Ask for the actual ingredient name and avoid vague mixtures sold as solutions to every health problem.
A market explanation can be interesting without turning into medical advice.
Bargaining without theatre
Bargaining is common in many souk shops, but there is no magic rule that every price should be cut by a fixed percentage. Compare, decide your maximum and negotiate only when you are genuinely willing to buy.
A respectful 'no thank you' is enough when you do not want the item.
Responsible buying questions
- Where was this made?
- Who made it?
- Is the material new, recycled or vintage?
- Can the seller explain the technique specifically?
- If shipping is offered, who is responsible for customs and damage?
- For antiques or protected materials, is export legal?
When a private shopping guide helps
A guide is useful when you have a defined shopping list and want to compare areas efficiently. We ask guests to tell us the items in advance so the route can be built around them.
We do not believe every historical city tour should become a shopping funnel. Shopping can be a separate purpose.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a carpet in Marrakech?
If you find a piece you genuinely like and understand the size, material, price and shipping. Do not buy only because the sales process creates urgency.
How much should I bargain in Morocco?
There is no universal percentage. Compare similar items, know your budget and negotiate respectfully.
Can you arrange a private shopping tour?
Yes. Share what you want to buy before the tour so the route can focus on relevant craft areas rather than generic shops.
Have a real shopping list?
