Best Time to Visit Morocco: Month by Month, Region by Region

Morocco crosses Atlantic, Mediterranean, mountain and desert climates. The month that is ideal for Essaouira is not automatically ideal for a Sahara crossing or high-altitude trek.

Quick answerSpring and autumn are the easiest all-round periods for many first-time itineraries. Winter is strong for cities and desert days but can bring cold nights and mountain snow. Summer works well on the Atlantic coast and for travellers who handle heat, but Marrakech and desert interiors can be extremely hot.

January to March

Cities can be comfortable in daytime, while mornings and nights are cooler than many visitors expect. The desert can be beautiful but cold after sunset. High Atlas conditions depend strongly on altitude and snow.

Pack layers instead of assuming 'Morocco equals hot'.

April to May

Spring is one of the easiest periods for combining Marrakech, Atlas and southern travel. Landscapes can be greener and daytime conditions are generally more forgiving than high summer.

Holiday periods and school breaks can increase demand, so book specialist accommodation and private vehicles early.

June to August

Summer is workable, but itinerary design matters. Marrakech sightseeing should use early mornings, shade and breaks. Long desert activities in midday heat are a poor idea.

Essaouira and the Atlantic become especially attractive when inland cities are hottest.

September to October

Autumn is another strong all-round period, with easier conditions for mixed city, mountain and desert itineraries. Temperatures still vary significantly between day and night.

November to December

Late autumn and early winter can be excellent for cultural trips and Sahara routes. Shorter daylight affects how many sightseeing stops fit into road days, and mountain weather should remain flexible.

Ramadan changes rhythm, not the value of the trip

Ramadan dates move earlier each solar year. Travel remains possible, but restaurant patterns, working hours and energy levels can shift. Respect fasting communities and plan meals and guides with current local conditions in mind.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Morocco?

There is no single best month, but April–May and September–October are strong all-round periods for many mixed itineraries.

Is Morocco too hot in summer?

Some inland and desert regions can be extremely hot. Coastal Morocco is often more comfortable, and Marrakech visits should be planned around early/late hours and shaded breaks.

Is the Sahara cold at night?

It can be, particularly in winter. Desert temperature swings are significant, so pack layers even when daytime sun feels warm.
